With wide receiver depth being an issue, the Dallas Cowboys decided to bring in USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin who could be an interesting playmaker

With James Washington hurting and Michael Gallup still rehabbing, the Dallas Cowboys needed more depth at the wide receiver position. Rather than looking for an experienced NFL veteran, they went outside the box and signed the MVP from the USFL, KaVontae Turpin.

A former wideout for TCU, Turpin was undrafted in 2019 and then took an interesting path to get recognition. He spent last year playing in the Fan Controlled Football League, then headed to Polland to play for the Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football.

Turpin then received his big break when he was drafted by the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. In 10 games, he registered 44 receptions for 540 yards with five touchdowns while adding another 129 yards and a score as a rusher.

Listed at just 5-foot-9 and 155-pounds, there’s not much of a chance that Turpin will become a No. 1 receiver in Dallas. He could, however, be a potential player in the slot — and has shown a knack for making players miss and racking up yards after the catch.

Dallas Cowboys add playmaker and possible return man

In addition to his ability to create after the catch, Turpin has proven to be a solid return man in the past as well. Dallas does currently have Tony Pollard, who has had success in this role, but with him expected to be more involved on offense this year, it would make sense to see what Turpin can bring to the table.

According to head coach Mike McCarthy, that’s exactly what the Cowboys plan to do. The head coach called him “dynamic with the ball in his hands,” and added that he has “Tony Pollard-type traits.”

Awful big praise for the newly added Cowboy, who should be a lot of fun to watch as he tries to make it to the 53-man roster.
