Kansas City Chiefs: Frank Clark, EDGE

Back in 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs decided to make some investments in their defense. None were larger than what they did in acquiring Frank Clark.

Kansas City gave the Seattle Seahawks a first-round pick and a conditional second while swapping third-rounders in order to land Clark. They then signed him to a five-year, $105.5 million contract with $63.5 million of that being guaranteed.

With Seattle, Clark was an impressive pass rusher. He had 136 tackles and 35 sacks in his first four seasons, with 32 of those sacks coming in the three years after his rookie campaign. Once in Kansas City, he seemed to lose some of his effectiveness.

Clark had 37 tackles for eight sacks in 2019 but has seen his numbers decline in each of the following seasons. He had 29 tackles and six sacks in 2020 and just 22 tackles and 4.5 sacks a year ago.

There was a strong belief that Kansas City was going to move on from him this offseason but instead, they re-worked his deal to keep him under contract for two more years — at $29 million with the chance to move that to $36 million.

The Chiefs are banking on Clark to rebound in 2022 but at this time, he looks like a player who isn’t living up to the reputation that he has.
