Cleveland Browns: The mid-round rookies

General manager Andrew Berry is getting a lot of grief for going after Deshaun Watson this offseason but it’s understandable why he did so. The Cleveland Browns have a very strong roster but lacked that elite quarterback to really push them over the edge.

Baker Mayfield was good enough to win with, but they wanted someone who was good enough to will them to wins on his own. As for the rest of the moves Berry has been making, he’s been knocking them out of the park.

He’s drafted well and other than Austin Hooper, his free agent signings have been beneficial to the team. The one issue with this is that some will begin to expect more from his draft selections than they should.

This is the case for Cleveland going into the 2022 season as two rookies are being pegged as difference-makers at two of their thinnest positions.

First is David Bell, a third-round pick from Purdue. Bell was automatic for the Boilermakers but tested poorly at the Combine, so he slid to Round 3. He could end up being a solid replacement for Jarvis Landry but to expect him to instantly be a success is a lot for a late day two pick.

The same is happening with Perrion Winfrey, one of their picks in Round 4. Winfrey was a good pass rusher for the Oklahoma Sooners but needs to improve against the run. As a rookie, he should be expected to play in a rotation but there are those who think he will be a day one starter and a major contributor.

Again, mid-round picks need time and these expectations should be tempered.
