Cam Newton, QB: Detroit Lions

Some team should sign Cam Newton, and it doesn’t have to be as a starter. When you look around the NFL at some of the backup quarterbacks teams are trotting out, with all due respect to their prior accomplishments, it’s laughable that Newton is not one of the 90-something or more quarterbacks signed to an NFL contract at the moment.

Now, Newton obviously needs to be waiting for the right opportunity to flourish, and I can’t help but love the situation in Detroit right now.

The Lions have one of the most intriguing coaching staffs in the entire NFL. Dan Campbell is an outstanding coach and Brad Holmes has really done a great job of building an exciting young roster in short order.

With all of the talent the Lions have at the skill positions and how good their offensive line is, Newton could potentially thrive in Detroit if he were to get a shot due to injury or if Jared Goff simply just struggles.

With all due respect to David Blough and Tim Boyle, there’s no chance I would take either of them over Cam Newton as a backup going into this season, especially for a team like Detroit that is certainly not going to be tanking in 2022. Yes, a lot depends on what Newton himself wants to do, but I think at some point this pairing could make some sense.
