Top 5 NFL trades at roster cuts: WR Laviska Shenault to the Carolina Panthers

Panthers get:

  • WR Laviska Shenault

Jaguars get:

  • 2023 7th-round pick
  • 2024 6th-round pick

The Panthers and Jaguars have now come together on multiple trades involving key players from the Jaguars’ 2020 NFL Draft class. Last year, it was the trade for cornerback CJ Henderson, who should be a key piece of the Panthers’ defense this year and going forward.

Now, it’s the former second-round receiver Laviska Shenault heading off to the Panthers to join the new Baker Mayfield-led group.

The Panthers are an interesting team right now. General manager Scott Fitterer has been making a bunch of trades in the last couple of years but it feels like the coaching staff in Carolina could be on its way out. Nothing wrong with upgrading the roster even if your coaching staff is in flux, especially when it comes to high-upside moves like this.

I’ve been waiting for some team to trade for Shenault, who has the type of ability to play the same kind of role we saw from Deebo Samuel last year in San Francisco. It’s not out of the question that Shenault, a castoff for the Jaguars, could quickly become a key piece of the Panthers’ offense.

The Jaguars could look like fools for this and the upside of the draft picks they acquired is minimal.

Top 5 NFL trades at roster cuts: DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles get:

  • DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
  • 2025 7th-round pick

Saints get:

  • 2023 5th-round pick
  • 2024 6th-round pick

Howie Roseman does it again. Back at the time of the 2022 NFL Draft, Roseman fleeced Titans general manager Jon Robinson by seemingly paying pennies on the dollar to acquire AJ Brown, who could be the best player on the Eagles’ offense in 2022.

Now, he’s struck another deal to land defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson for an already vastly improved defense led by coordinator Jonathan Gannon. Gardner-Johnson can play a variety of spots for the Eagles, including matching up in the slot playing man-to-man coverage. He’s just 24 years old and was only credited with allowing one touchdown on 61 passes into his coverage.

For a team that has been trying desperately to upgrade the secondary the last few years (acquisitions of Darius Slay, James Bradberry) this feels like another home run addition.
