The Dolphins‘ 2021 season was a tale of two halves. After starting 1-7, they then won eight of their next nine to finish 9-8. In the offseason, they made some key additions, particularly head coach Mike McDaniel and wide receiver Tyreek Hill. McDaniel was the offensive coordinator for a strong 49ers team, and the style of offense he ran should translate well to the weapons he has at his disposal in Miami.
While there has been a lot of justified criticism for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, you also have to understand the situation he has been put in has not been conducive to success. He came into the league injured and thrust into a starting role midseason. He then spent a year under a coach that openly admitted they did not believe in Tua as a starter. As I mentioned above, McDaniel should be able to run a similar offense in Miami as he did in San Francisco.
Tua has many similar characteristics to Jimmy Garappolo: a weaker arm, solid accuracy, and sometimes questionable decision-making. He also has yards after the catch playmakers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. As the icing on the cake, their win total is set at a modest 8.5, meaning they would have cashed the over last year in a season many felt was underwhelming. While there could be some growing pains along the way, I fully expect the Dolphins to be in the playoff mix come December and easily cash this over 8.5-win total.
