Breece Hall has to shine for the Jets

The Jets took the first running back in the draft when they selected Breece Hall early in the second round despite having Michael Carter on the team. While Carter isn’t as good of a prospect as Hall is, the Jets had a slew of other needs on their roster, so the selection of a running back that early will be watched closely.

Hall, to his credit, has the makings of an elite running back. He has great size and was a force in college. He needs to refine a few things in the passing game, but overall, he should become an above-average running back at worst. For a Jets offense trying to maximize on Zach Wilson’s rookie contract though, the selection of Hall may have been a luxury.

Worse yet, Hall has yet to outright win the starting running back role. While he will certainly get a lot of run even if Carter is the “starter”, he needs to justify the selection early in his career. The Jets could have gone a slew of different directions, but they chose Hall because they think he can be a difference maker on their offense. He needs to show that he can do that.
