The Detroit Lions ended the first half against the Seattle Seahawks on a bittersweet note, missing an extra point after scoring a touchdown on fourth down to cut Seattle’s deficit. Unfortunately, the excitement of cutting the deficit was short-lived even with the Lions getting the ball coming out of halftime. The Seahawks defense came up with a big play courtesy of rookie Tariq Woolen.

The rookie out of UTSA, a big-bodied speedster who has been thrust into the starting lineup this year, got himself a nice pick-six off of Jared Goff early in the third quarter.

Leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft, Tariq Woolen was a favorite among the NFL Draft community. Why? Well, you don’t often see 6-foot-4 corners over 200 pounds that can also run a 4.26 in the 40-yard dash. Woolen is physically a freak of nature and we see those athletic traits all on this play.

First of all, the break on the ball is excellent. He can see what Jared Goff is going to do and he puts himself in better position than the wide receiver to make a play on the ball. He utilizes his outstanding speed and length to make the play and then beat everyone down the sideline, finishing it off with a little playmaking ability once he gets inside the five.

Just watching his long strides down the sideline — it’s impressive. Woolen is emerging early on this season for the Seahawks despite not being taken in the 2022 NFL Draft until the fifth round. Despite the fact that he came from a “smaller” school and perhaps was a little raw, seeing him last all the way to that particular pick was rather surprising.

The Seahawks historically love these kinds of athletes in the draft and specifically on the defensive side of the ball. Woolen has been taking his lumps early on and even took one getting beat to the inside near the end of the first half by Lions receiver Josh Reynolds. But you’ll take some of the bad with this kind of good, right?
