The Bears need to stop settling for field goals

The Chicago Bears’ inability to find the end zone won’t help the team win games. Again, they failed to find the end zone last week. Additionally, they only have six total touchdowns, only two from passes.

The Bears need to score more points and they won’t do that by just hitting field goals. They average 16 points per game, ranking 31st in the league. They also rank 31st in passing touchdowns.

In addition to Getsy needing to open up the play-calling, Fields has to trust his receivers more. Yes, his receivers have trouble gaining separation.  Many times, when Fields looks downfield, his receivers are covered like a blanket. Opponents haven’t even had to double-team the receivers.

Maybe because of this, Fields has trouble trusting his targets. Adding to the problem is the offensive line giving up 16 sacks so far this season. That is on pace for 68 or 10 more than they gave up last season.

Fields needs to forget what happened the play before and make the next play. There were times he wasn’t able to do that, though. In one of the red zone plays, Fields slid to his left and he could see that tight end Cole Kmet was open. Sure, there was a defender closing in, but he wouldn’t get there in time. It would have gotten the Bears inside the five.

Instead of making the throw, Fields hesitated and tucked the ball. He ended up getting sacked and taking a loss.

Fields is still young and he’ll learn to make decisions quicker. However, he has been under siege half of the time he drops back. With that much pressure, he needs to make decisions even quicker.

Perhaps his connection with Darnell Mooney will help. After struggling to connect in the first three games, Fields and Mooney worked for 94 yards against the Giants last week. The two players have been like brothers since Fields stepped foot in practice last season. Hopefully, last week was just the beginning.

Hopefully, Fields doesn’t feel too shell-shocked to be able to pick things up quicker. He just needs to drop back and make throw more passes, and that’s where Getsy comes in.
