Nobody should have been overly surprised that two of the NFL’s lowest-scoring teams — the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos — lived up to their reputations thus far in an absolutely brutal Thursday Night Football matchup. Unfortunately, the NFL world had to tune in to one of the truly most abysmal displays of offense you could possibly see at the professional level featuring two of the best quarterbacks of the last two decades. Al Michaels, who is now calling TNF games for Amazon Prime alongside Kirk Herbstreit, was at the forefront of those voicing their displeasure with the game.

Michaels did not mince words on the Amazon Prime broadcast and was continually throwing shade at the two teams, starting in the second half.

Al Michaels was understandably infuriated while calling Broncos-Colts

As the kickoff for the NFL Week 5 slate, Broncos-Colts certainly had the star power in terms of the names at the quarterback position with Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan, respectively, but this was anything but a prime time matchup. In fact, Al Michaels had some ideas about exactly where this particular matchup should have been slotted instead…

Michaels was absolutely full of zingers throughout the game. One of his best quips came after a commercial break by saying, “If anyone didn’t think we could find highlight, we did.” Truly amazing stuff from Michaels, who had to be thinking this was one of the worst games he’s ever had to call as an announcer. There are plenty of bad football games, but this is a game in prime time featuring two ex-stars at the QB position, making their struggles frustrating to watch for everyone.

Including the people calling the games.

At one point in the game, Michaels had reached the point of trying to convince himself that at the very least, he was witnessing a great defensive battle. Kirk Herbstreit then joined in on the fun.

As the game trickled to overtime, Denver Broncos fans actually started leaving the stadium…of a tie game. The fans were leaving the stadium in droves, which caused Al Michaels to quip that “sometimes you’ve just got to beat the traffic”. And it wasn’t like Michaels was being hateful or spiteful to the teams playing in the game. It was truly an embarrassing product being put on the field by both the Colts and the Broncos offensively, and that was compounded by the fact that during the game, Michaels and Herbstreit were reminded that their next game is between the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears, two more of the worst offenses in the NFL.

It was an absolutely hilarious series of comments throughout the second half and overtime from Al Michaels. His checks will clear all the same but he’s gotten used to calling some of the best action on the weekly NFL slate during Sunday Night Football on NBC. Unfortunately, the NFL has a bigger issue at hand with its Thursday night product and fans/players/teams have been fed up with Thursday games for quite some time now.

This particular matchup was a bloodbath in terms of player injuries, and it was embarrassing for the league to have two seemingly washed-up star players on display in the same game playing the worst we’ve seen them play in a decade. Al Michaels made sure everyone at least had fun listening.
