The Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons didn’t waste any time after Sunday’s games to make roster moves and in this case, a trade between them sends Deion Jones to Cleveland. On Sunday, the Browns and Falcons both lost and on Monday, they both decided that a change needed to be made, just not a major one.

It is being announced that both teams have opted to make a move. The Browns will receive a former Pro Bowl linebacker and the Falcons will get draft compensation.

Cleveland Browns swing a deal for linebacker Deion Jones

Deion Jones is heading north to the Browns and Cleveland is sending Atlanta a 2024 6th-round draft pick for the linebacker as well as a 2024 7th-round pick from the Falcons. See, I told you it wasn’t a blockbuster.

Jones was drafted by the Falcons in the 2nd round of the 2016 draft. He has spent his entire career with the Falcons making the Pro Bowl in his second season. He has played on both sides and in the middle.

Jones may have lost a step but he is reliable. Over the last three seasons, he has started 16 of 16 games and has only missed 12 games in his career but has not played a down in 2022.

The Browns will have to remove him from IR. He is eligible to return now but has missed the season so far. If healthy, the Browns will get a consistent inside linebacker that will help their defense but the better days are behind him. While the compensation may seem light, the Falcons get to unload a contract and free up salary commitment.

If Jones can come off IR and successfully get on the field, he will provide Cleveland with quality depth in the middle and right now, the Browns need to get better work from their linebackers so this is a move that makes sense for them and comes with only a financial commitment, but as we have learned over the last several years, money and salary cap really don’t have much to do with one another.
