Can the surging Jets end another long losing streak?
The New York Jets own the longest current postseason drought in the NFL. But first, the team looks to end another embarrassing skid.
How bad is bad? Dating back to 2016, the New York Jets have faced the New England Patriots twice a year. That’s 12 meetings vs. their longtime AFC East rivals. And it’s safe to say it’s not gone well for the Green and White. And it’s not just the fact that the franchise has dropped those dozen outings against Bill Belichick’s team. The vast majority of those contests just haven’t been close.
New York Jets looking to end another losing streak this weekend
All told, the Patriots have scored a combined 378 points during their current run of success in this series. The Jets have been limited to only 133 points. New England has scored at least 22 points in each of those victories. New York has been limited to 17 or fewer points in 11 of the 12 contests. All told, Belichick’s team has won nine of those tilts by 14 or more points.
But there’s one astounding number over the course of this losing streak by the Jets that is really hard to ignore. The Patriots played turnover-free football in nine of those 12 meetings. In fact, New England gave up the football a combined five times in those dozen victories.
Meanwhile, the Jets have been more than just a little generous when it came to handing out gifts. Only once in those games did the team play mistake-free ball. But in the other 11 contests, the club committed a disturbing 30 turnovers.
Entering Sunday, the Jets’ current winning streak has reached four games. The club owns a 5-2 record after seven weeks just one season after finishing 4-13. Earlier this year, the team ended a 12-game losing streak to AFC East rivals by routing the Dolphins. Could there be a case of divisional déjà vu on Sunday at MetLife Stadium?
