Chicago Bears come crashing back to earth in disaster loss to Cowboys
Well, that didn’t last long. The euphoria of Monday Night Football lasted but a mere few hours for the Chicago Bears before reality set in.
The 49-29 loss to the Dallas Cowboys (6-2) has this team back where they are supposed to be, a team that won’t be competing for anything this year except for the services of the upcoming free-agent class.
If there’s anything good that Bears (3-5) fans should hang their hat on, it’s this. Justin Fields did look better and improved. That said, stop with the mental gymnastics. Only 151 yards passing, which means this season, Fields, in eight games, has thrown for 1,048 yards. In eight games. That is not good. Yes, he has shown himself to be a strong-willed athlete, but just a shade over 1,000 yards passing is bad.
Also, do wide receivers not know how to catch the football? Chicago had multiple drops, and frankly, they need a MAJOR renovation. Darnell Mooney is fine. He’s not going anywhere. But in terms of rookie Velus Jones Jr, those questioning that selection may have good reason now after this rough start.
Defensively, it appears the Robert Quinn trade might still be on the players’ minds. As evidenced by Dak Prescott’s 250 yards passing and Tony Pollard’s 131 yards and three touchdowns. The offensive line and wide receiver cores need help, but the defensive line needs new faces and BETTER players.
The Chicago Bears are exactly who many thought they would be. A rebuilding team that needs a lot of work.
What happened on Monday Night with New England was a mirage. There were glimpses of that against Dallas, but did anyone honestly believe the Chicago Bears could have two straight weeks of surprising teams? Be realistic. Halloween may be here, but you can’t trick anyone and be treated twice.
Nonetheless, it is clear that the Bears need to do more unloading. Whomever you can trade before Tuesday, do it. Start with a completely clean slate in the offseason, and use the cap space you have on the offensive and defensive lines. Wide receivers can come in the draft, and this time, hopefully, better results.
If the Bears could also add a cornerback, feel free to do so, but the trenches need to be a priority, as are the weapons for Justin Fields. He showed something, but not enough. The Bears aren’t going anywhere this year, and they got that reality check with Dallas. Spooky, but true.
