The New York Jets have a serious quarterback problem, and need an immediate upgrade, but what could their options be for the 2023 season?  I’m sorry, but Zach Wilson is not good.  He just isn’t good.  It’s a shame because General Manager Joe Douglas has done a heck of a job building up this roster between the draft and free agency.

However, in his most important draft pick, Douglas whiffed big time.  Wilson is erratic.  He makes terrible decisions, throws back-breaking interceptions, and makes the offense one-dimensional.  The Jets are 5-3 on the season, putting them on pace for 11 wins in 2022.

Right now, New York is in a playoff spot with half of their season over.  However, Zach Wilson is the weak link, and may end up holding the Jets back more than he already has.  Being that Joe Douglas does not have the time to draft and develop another quarterback, he needs to make a big, big swing for one in the 2023 offseason.

New York Jets quarterback options for 2023 and beyond

Tom Brady – 2023 free agent

Tom Brady is a free agent at the end of the 2022 season.  He retired at the end of the 2021 season, and be unretired several weeks later.  It sure does look like his time in Tampa Bay will end after the 2022 season after three seasons.

If Brady wants to continue playing, he may opt to not re-sign with the Bucs and could look elsewhere for a better situation where he could simply be plugged in.  The Jets’ defense is plenty good enough, and their offense has a ton of playmakers.

It’d be a natural fit even though Tom Brady is a California kid.  He’d fit the New York vibe and would instantly make the Jets a legitimate Super Bowl contender.  This would be Joe Douglas’ ultimate, legacy-type move to bring Brady into a green jersey.

Jimmy Garoppolo – 2023 free agent

Jimmy Garoppolo was supposed to be traded at the end of the 2021 season as the San Francisco 49ers entered the Trey Lance era, but no team wanted to take a chance with his shoulder injury.  So, the 49ers constructed a new contract to keep him as the backup.

When Lance went down with a gruesome ankle injury, Garoppolo was when inserted back as the starter.  However, he is a free agent at the end of the season, and the Jets would be a natural fit, as they brought over former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as the head coach, and he brought over Mike LaFleur who was with the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan for years.

Garoppolo is also handsome, as we know, and also comes with a natural fit to the New York, big city vibe.
