The Denver Broncos have been the NFL’s biggest disappointment in 2022. For the last couple of years, this is a team that was dubbed a “quarterback away” from title contention, but little did the fans in Denver know that getting a star QB would make this team…worse? Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we’re seeing with rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett and veteran QB Russell Wilson.

The Broncos have the NFL’s worst scoring offense since 2000. They are not just bad relative to the 2022 NFL season, they are bad historically. Broncos fans were certain that getting rid of Pat Shurmur, Drew Lock, and Teddy Bridgewater would solve their problems but the reality is, this team might be one of the league’s best with those guys running the operation on offense, given how well the Denver defense has played in 2022.

Why are the Broncos one of the league’s biggest disappointments in 2022? Let’s take a look at five reasons.

1. Denver Broncos did not get the Russell Wilson everyone thought they were

Believe it or not, the struggles of Russell Wilson so far in the 2022 NFL season are just one of the many concerns for the Denver Broncos right now. Even if he’s just one of the issues right now in Denver, the pressure on and criticism of Russell Wilson are justified because this man signed a $245 million deal before the start of the season. The Broncos gave Wilson $50 million just to sign the deal, and Wilson received $57 million in total cash this season for the Broncos out of $161 million in total guarantees and $124 million guaranteed at signing.

That’s a lot of money for eight touchdown passes in 11 games. The Broncos are the league’s worst scoring offense, they are terrible on third downs, they are terrible in the red zone, and Wilson is rightfully going to shoulder the lion’s share of blame for that. The Broncos are 3-8 right now but they could easily be 8-3 if they had even a fraction more efficient of an offense throughout the season. It all starts with the guy under center, but there’s definitely more to it.
