This week, the Washington Commanders continued their hot streak with a win over the Atlanta Falcons. This was their third win in a row and their sixth win over the last seven weeks. That run has helped propel the Commanders to a 7-5 record on the season. Who has been one of the stars of the run recently? Montez Sweat.
The first three seasons of Sweat’s career gave us a glimpse of his talent. It still felt like he hadn’t put it all together though. Maybe 2022 was the year he became a true superstar.
Instead, Sweat didn’t pick up a sack over his first four games of the year. He picked things up with a two-sack performance in his fifth game, however, and added his third sack of the year the very next week.
Montez Sweat is playing his best football for the Washington Commanders
Still, entering Week 10, Sweat’s three sacks on the season weren’t impressing fans. In Washington’s Monday night win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, Sweat added another sack. He added two more in Week 11, then another sack in Week 12.
Three straight games with at least one sack put Sweat at seven sacks this season. That’s just two away from tying a career-high (9) with five games left of the schedule.
We’re seeing the best form of Montez Sweat at the moment. And the Commanders are getting Chase Young back to bolster an already terrifying defensive line. Young joins Sweat, Da’Ron Payne, and Jonathan Allen for what is hands down the best d-line in all of football. With that type of protection around him, Sweat will never be facing double teams.
He’s showing not only speed and athleticism but an ability to push offensive linemen back and get some strength sacks as well.
Everything seems to be coming up in the favor of Montez Sweat at the moment. The Washington Commanders are on a winning streak, and he’s playing a big role. We might be witnessing the superstar breakout of the defensive end, as he goes after the first double-digit sack total of his career.
