The NFL allowed teams to use an alternate helmet for the first time since 2013. Here’s a ranking of the best alternates seen so far in 2022.

Back in 2013, the NFL decided to scrap the alternate helmet as they were focused on player safety. The belief was using the same helmet throughout the year would potentially reduce concussions since it would limit the possibility of a helmet being a poor fit.

Now in 2022, they decided that this strategy might not be correct so they allowed teams one alternate helmet. So far, 13 franchises have used theirs on the field and we look at them now while ranking them from worst to first.

13. Washington Commanders

For years, Washington refused to change their former name which was a rather offensive one. They finally did make the move and went with the Washington Football Team while they re-branded.

During that time, they had one of the best uniforms in the league. But then, they decided to go with the Commanders which is a bad name on its own, but then they messed up the uniform.

It’s not terrible overall but it’s a step backward from what hey have. Or at least the normal ones are a step back, but the alternate black uniform is a giant leap in the wrong direction.

The major issue is the blocked line placed above and below the name on the back. Although, they have this in small writing on the front of the back and it’s far too prominent on their primary jersey as well.

In the end, Dan Snyder’s team messed things up — which means it’s business as usual.
