The Tennessee Titans are in an interesting situation after firing their GM, Jon Robinson. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill could be on the move in 2023.  Entering week 14 of the 2022 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans are 36-17 with Ryan Tannehill at quarterback.

In those games, he’s thrown 87 touchdown passes against 31 interceptions for a 101.2 passer rating.  The numbers have been pretty for the two parties since 2019, but it’s clear that the Titans are simply not good enough to get over the hump.

Whether that’s because of their quarterback or overall roster is probably debated by many, but with the Titans recently firing their General Manager, Jon Robinson, the Titans are no longer married to Tannehill, and his contract situation makes it very enticing for the Titans to move off of him at the end of the season.

The Titans could save $27 million on their 2023 cap number by cutting or trading Ryan Tannehill as a post-June 1 designation.  They’d have to eat $9.6 million in cap space, but the cap savings are too large to ignore.

Given that they’ve been in a pretty bad division, their path to the playoffs is easier than most teams.  Perhaps that’s why they’ve been able to win a ton of games.  They were actually the #1 seed in the AFC last year but were beaten by the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs in 2021.

The Titans selected Malik Willis out of Liberty in the 2022 NFL Draft and Willis fits what the modern-day quarterback should be able to do.  Not only does Willis have a cannon for an arm, but he’s got the mobility to rival Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts.

With Robinson out of the picture, the logical scenario here seems to be the Titans moving away from Tannehill, saving a ton of their 2023 cap number, and seeing if Malik Willis is legit.  Or, the new General Manager, whoever that may be, might want to enact a different solution.

This is not a knock on Tannehill, who has been an average starter in the NFL at the very least since entering the league in 2012.  However, his time in Tennessee could be coming to an end, especially if the Titans cannot do any damage in the playoffs again.
