These 3 NFL teams could already be in big trouble for 2023
3. Arizona Cardinals
If there’s one team you can really already see the writing on the wall for the 2023 season at this point in time, it’s the Arizona Cardinals.
Let’s start with the obvious, which is the sad news that Kyler Murray suffered a torn ACL in the team’s most recent game. The Cardinals have invested a ton in Murray over the last handful of years, and understandably so. Murray is their franchise QB. They took him first overall just one year after taking Josh Rosen with a top-10 pick.
The Cardinals gave Murray a 5-year, $230,500,000 extension in the 2022 offseason and they have clearly committed to building around him for the foreseeable future. With $189.5 million in total guarantees, the Cardinals put their eggs in this basket, and you can’t really blame them for it. Kyler is their QB.
The unfortunate reality, as of right now, is that Murray likely won’t be ready for the start of next season or, at the very least, it will take a near-miraculous sort of comeback for him to be at 100 percent health and able to do the things that make him great by next September.
In a worst-case scenario, the Cardinals have to wait all through next season before getting Murray back to 100 percent health, and this is after general manager Steve Keim stepped down due to health reasons while head coach Kliff Kingsbury is on the hot seat.
This Cardinals team may have to choose one of DeAndre Hopkins or Hollywood Brown in the offseason. You could be looking at a total reset of the brain trust with a new GM and/or head coach.
Whoever is in charge of building this roster may also be in charge of putting together a new coaching staff that suits Murray while also keeping this team relevant in 2023. That’s not going to be an easy task for anyone. Not to mention, the Cardinals need something, anything off the edge. They need an influx of cornerback help.
This team might be getting worse in 2023 before it gets better in 2024 and beyond.
