NFL Week 16 takeaways: Finally, playoffs for Justin Herbert
Despite losing, the Eagles prove how good they are without Jalen Hurts
Many have made the case for Hurts as MVP, but Saturday proved that the Eagles’ success is more about the strength of the roster.
Hurts has had a great season, but I think his value has been a bit overblown. The 24-year-old quarterback has led the Eagles to the top seed in the NFC, while throwing for 3,472, 22 touchdowns, five interceptions, and has run for 747 yards and 13 touchdowns.
However, Philadelphia possesses a top offensive line, top defense, a great running game, and above-average weapons on the outside in A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. I am not entirely sure that Hurts elevates the players around him. That is not to take credit away from what he has done this season but seeing what Gardner Minshew did on Saturday shows how good this roster is.
Minshew started on Saturday, throwing for 355 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Eagles would also score 34 points with Smith and Brown each securing over 100 receiving yards.
Philadelphia is not a Super Bowl team without Hurts, but I think the MVP conversation has to cool down a bit. Patrick Mahomes has clearly been the best player in the NFL, leading the Chiefs to the most points and most yards in the NFL after losing Tyreek Hill.
Hurts has been excellent this season, but the Eagles’ well-constructed roster is more of the story in Philadelphia.
