The Denver Broncos decided to close the Nathaniel Hackett chapter before he could finish year one in Denver.  Hackett compiled a record of 4-11 in his first year with Denver and with the miserable performance of the offense, which was expected to shine under Russell Wilson, resulted in his tenure coming to an end.

Hackett was hired as the Broncos‘ head man after the 2022 season and shortly after, Denver orchestrated one the biggest trades in NFL history, acquiring quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks. These moves led many to predict the Denver Broncos would take the AFC West crown from the Kansas City Chiefs.

What would transpire throughout the 2022 season was the exact opposite of what many anticipated.  The AFC West was supposed to be the NFL’s toughest division, loaded with quarterbacks.  Unfortunately for Denver fans, Russell Wilson has been anything but the former Pro Bowl player we watched in Seattle for several years.

Denver’s offense currently ranks 25th in the NFL and dead last in scoring, averaging a paltry 15.5 points per game.  When the Broncos signed Wilson, it was believed Denver was only a quarterback away from competing for a Super Bowl title and now the question is, can Wilson rebound in 2023?  That could be determined by who they hire as the new head coach this off-season.

The Denver Broncos announced Jerry Rosburg will take over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season, while the Broncos begin their fourth head coach search since winning the Super Bowl seven years ago.

The job may be appealing to potential coaches because of the Broncos’ defense and offensive weapons.  The question is who will the Broncos be looking for?  Will they want a defensive-minded head coach, such as a Leslie Frazier, or could they lure Sean Payton back to the NFL?  Regardless of which direction they go, the key will be unlocking the Pro Bowl talent of Russell Wilson, if the talent is still there.

If the new coach can successfully get Wilson back to his Seattle days, the Broncos have a championship-caliber defense and still have some excellent weapons on the offensive side of the ball.
