Washington Commanders need QB Derek Carr desperately in 2023
The Washington Commanders have a good roster from top to bottom, but nothing to speak of at the quarterback position. They need Derek Carr. I find this potential fit to be perfect for both sides. With Derek Carr being benched and essentially sent home, his tenure with the Raiders appears to be over.
Carr has played nine seasons in the silver and black and has put up some solid numbers. In fact, Carr ranks 32nd all-time in passing yards and 38th all-time in passing touchdowns.
The 31-year-old has been a steady presence in the NFL since he entered the league, and it’s baffling that the Raiders seem to be done with him. Contractually, his recent extension is very easy to trade.
The dead money that the Raiders would have to take on is completely dwarfed by their cap savings. Derek Carr will likely have a handful of teams who would be interested in his services, but I think one team needs him the most, and that’s the Washington Commanders.
From top to bottom, outside of quarterback, their roster is as good as any team in the NFL. They have an exceptional defensive front seven, a solid offensive line, and good pass catchers, led by Terry McLaurin.
Between Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz, the Commanders were not able to stay in the playoff race for long enough. While Heinicke is a nice story and seems like a try energizer at the position, he is not a viable starting quarterback in the NFL.
The Carson Wentz acquisition also has not gone as they had hoped. The Commanders aren’t likely going to be able to make a huge move like the Broncos did for Russell Wilson or the Rams did for Matthew Stafford, but they can make a steady and solid addition in Derek Carr.
For both sides, this makes sense. The Washington Commanders get a solid quarterback who instantly becomes the second-best QB in the division who turns just 32 in March, and the Raiders get to end their Carr experiment, which is something they have seemed to want to do for years.
