Who gets benched in the final game?

In his press conference, Eberflus announced that he, his coaches, and general manager Ryan Poles are discussing who plays on Sunday. He said that player health is a consideration as to who plays or sits.

The biggest question is quarterback Justin Fields. There are many who don’t want him to risk an injury in a meaningless game. However, the coaches feel that live experience is imperative for his development. Practice snaps cannot replace real-game experience.

In his Wednesday press conference, Eberflus said that Fields was out. He suffered a hip strain and is too sore still. That means he won’t get the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a season, falling 63 yards short. However, Fields’ health is of the utmost concern.

Fields’ season is now over and he can focus on healing and getting more work to get better.

There are other players who can use playing time. Dominique Robinson, Angelo Blackson, Josh Blackwell, Justin Jones, A.J. Thomas, and Elijah Hicks could be playing for their future in Chicago. They may not be starters but they could still play a part in the rebuild.

Those are just the ones on defense. There is also Alex Leatherwood, Ja’Tyre Carter, and Trevon Wesco, among others, who need evaluation.

It’ll be interesting to see who sits and who plays once the game begins.
