Chicago Bears have one final shot to end their losing streak
The Chicago Bears need to give a better showing than last week
The Chicago Bears’ effort last week was just embarrassing. After scoring 10 points and gaining 145 yards on offense on their first two drives, Chicago had zero points and 85 yards on their next 10 drives.
Defensively, the Bears allowed the Lions to do whatever they wanted. Detroit finished the game with 504 total yards. It didn’t matter what the situation was, the Lions would succeed.
Early in the third quarter, the Lions faced a third and 18. They ran a simple draw play so they could give the punter more space to kick. Instead, the Bears failed to tackle and the Lions got 35 yards on the play. On the very next play, they ran another draw and got 40 yards. On just two plays, Detroit went from their own 17 to the Bears’ 8.
The Bears checked out after that.
Eberflus has to get his players to play hard in the final game. Despite suffering through 13 losses, some of them of the blowout variety, the players were always playing hard. The great aspect about this team was that there was no quit.
It was the opposite against the Lions. It seemed as if the players looked for the first excuse to just stop playing.
The coaches also had a hand in that. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and defensive coordinator Alan Williams did nothing to adjust their game plan and help their players. Getsy kept calling straight dropbacks despite losing two offensive linemen in the game. It was reminiscent of Fields’ debut against the Cleveland Browns last season. Fields was getting battered yet nothing different was called.
The coaches have to do a better job if they want the players to do it. They have to do what they can to put the players in a position to succeed. If they cannot do that, the players won’t play hard.
Most people knew that wins and losses were not a priority this season. Poles had to tear down the roster and get rid of big contracts so he could have the flexibility to make bigger moves in the offseason. However, there is no excuse for not giving a good effort.
Win or lose, at least the Chicago Bears played hard and that made the fans happy. What happened last week they didn’t and it was embarrassing. That cannot happen again, even if it is the final game of the season.
