Lovie Smith always wanted to find ways to help the Chicago Bears win games. He did what he could, but Bears fans will forever love his latest victory.

Chicago will forever be indebted to their old coach thanks to a Hail Mary that was answered with style and grace. The Bears lost to Minnesota, but because Lovie’s Texans pulled off a 32-31 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Houston gifts Chicago the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Who knew the old ball coach had a soft spot for wanting the Bears to thrive? Well, he certainly did, and the Bears have every reason to say thank you to the man who, by all accounts, was the most successful coach in the Windy City since Mike Ditka.

Such a shame that Smith could not win the big one in Chicago. He got them there, but the offense failed, and the Bears fell to the Colts, who, ironically, Smith just beat to ensure Chicago would get the top pick. As such, thanks are in order.

But now to the Bears. Starting Nathan Peterman should have been a clear sign that the team was more interested in their draft position. Mixing in Tim Boyle only reaffirmed that notion. But the Vikings still had something to play for.

The only downside of the game was the Duke Shelley interception, and frankly, as much as that was needed for the Bears if they really wanted to secure at least the No. 2 pick, the ensuing celebration was still a bit over the line, as safety Jaquan Brisker pointed out.

Lovie Smith helped the Chicago Bears secure the No. 1 overall pick; now it’s time for the team to use it to build their franchise.

It is highly likely that Chicago will trade down from the No. 1 pick to acquire more draft capital to build their team. That said, if they choose to stay where they are, there are endless possibilities, as by picking 1st, every player on the board is available. That includes Alabama superstar pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr.

Having said that, it is more and more likely that the Bears will trade down, and given the number of holes on their roster, it’s for the better. They could still get Anderson and extra draft capital in the process, but let’s not tempt fate too quickly. Chicago must enjoy the situation they are in right now.

Having said that, it is now up to general manager Ryan Poles to do what he was brought here to do. You have cap space, you have a franchise quarterback, and you also have the top overall pick in the draft. There are really no excuses left. This year, it is what it is; you have to go through pains to succeed. You got the resources; now go find the talent.

Oh, and one last thing. A big thank you to Lovie Smith. You love Chicago, and they love you back. Thank you, Lovie Smith, for giving the Bears an opportunity to change the franchise in a big way. Thank you for helping them get the top overall pick. Times are truly changing for the better, and the offseason can’t come fast enough.
