In all, 18 teams concluded their 2022 campaign and began the next part of their journey Monday morning — the 2023 offseason and the 2023 NFL Draft. An eventful regular season helped those 18 teams evaluate their rosters for next season. Owners of each franchise will strategize with their staff to maximize success – beginning with scouting for the 2023 NFL Draft.

The incoming class of rookies has depth, providing franchises a chance to score a player that will increase success next season. Nick Siriani’s Eagles are one of two playoff teams with a pick in the first fifteen picks, (via New Orleans) and will look to use it to their advantage. The Jets, Lions, Packers, and Titans fell shy of a playoff berth and will use the draft to improve for 2023.

Here is how I expect the first several picks to pan out based on their film this season.

2023 NFL Draft Pick #1 – Chicago Bears: Peter Skoronski, OL, Northwestern

Team Weaknesses: Offensive Line

Justin Fields may have found a home in Chicago. That is if the franchise commits to building around him. An impressive sophomore year from a former first-round pick warmed the hearts of Bears fans. At the end of 2022, Fields ranked 16th in passing touchdowns (17) and seventeenth in quarterback rating (53.9) – an improvement from a difficult rookie campaign. Earing yards on the ground became the theme for Luke Getsy’s offense. It improved his quarterback’s production, but worried fans who believe extra hits result in more injuries.

Improving the offensive line will enhance Justin Fields’ productivity. More time in the pocket leads to more completions. An extra run blocker equates to bigger run gaps. Either way, you slice it, the time for Chicago to invest in their frontier is now – starting with the first overall pick.

Drafting offensive linemen isn’t flashy, but essential. Peter Skoronski is an ideal fit for a dual-threat quarterback. He has experience playing left tackle, but can run block with guard efficiency. His pulling ability is noteworthy and could complement Fields on the ground. Chicago’s quarterback was tied first in times sacked (55) – an eyesore for their fanbase.
