Chicago Bears 2022 season review: Grading the offense
Chicago Bears 2022 review: Tight ends
One of the keys to the Chicago Bears’ offense is having the tight ends involved.
The key player in the unit is Cole Kmet. Kmet was the Bears’ second-round pick in 2020. While he has progressed in his first two seasons, it wasn’t fast enough for some fans.
What bothered most fans is Kmet’s inability to find the end zone. He had two touchdown catches in his first two seasons. In fact, his last touchdown grab was in Week 12 of his rookie season. That streak lasted until Week 7 of this season.
Then something happened. Kmet went on a binge of touchdowns. Suddenly, he had five touchdown catches in three games, including consecutive games in which he caught two touchdowns.
Kmet went five weeks without a touchdown but finished the season strong, recording touchdowns in the final two weeks of the season.
For the season, Kmet finished with 50 catches for 544 yards and 7 touchdowns. The yards were the most for a Chicago Bears receiver. Additionally, his 10.9 yards per catch was the best of his career.
In addition to his receiving, Kmet has taken a big step forward as a blocker. He worked hard on improving in that area and head coach Matt Eberflus noticed that.
Kmet had a good season, even with the ups and downs of the passing game. His arrow appears to be going up. Now let’s see if the Bears get some more help for the tight ends unit. Grade: B
