5. Kareem Jackson, safety

One veteran player whose time with the Denver Broncos is likely coming to an end is veteran safety Kareem Jackson.

Jackson very quietly racked up over 90 tackles this season for the Denver Broncos defense, but despite his productivity on the stat sheet in terms of tackles, the Broncos probably need to go a different direction at this position and get some more dynamic playmakers on the back end of the defense.

Jackson came to Denver having primarily played cornerback with the Houston Texans and made a fantastic transition to the safety spot under Vic Fangio, where he’s been able to stick.

The Broncos brought Jackson back in 2022 knowing that the players they had at the safety position needed some more time to develop, and it looks like they were right. Although we saw players like PJ Locke and Caden Sterns make big plays in 2022, they both dealt with injuries and couldn’t stay on the field consistently.

Going forward, that will likely be the expectation for one or both of them. Sterns now has multiple interceptions in his first two NFL seasons despite only playing just 586 total snaps. What’s interesting about Sterns’ 2022 snap counts, however, is that he was playing 84 percent of them prior to injury.

He likely would have supplanted Jackson in the lineup were it not for that injury.

I think we’ll see the Broncos push their chips into the center of the table for Sterns here in 2023 and give him the shot to be the full-time guy next to Justin Simmons.
