Chicago Bears Offensive coordinator — Luke Getsy

Many fans thought it was a coup for the Chicago Bears to hire Luke Getsy. Getsy was the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers. He got to work with and help the great Aaron Rodgers.

The fans felt they’d finally have a modern offense to compete with other teams.

What many forgot was that the Bears still didn’t have the players to make that happen. Early on in the season, many thought the offense would be the same as the failing one run by Nagy.

While Fields was getting hit and his receivers dropping passes, the fans felt that Fields’ abilities would go to waste and he wouldn’t develop. Then Getsy did something Nagy wouldn’t — he adjusted his system.

Getsy had Fields run a lot more than he had earlier in the season. While his system is more suited for a passer, Getsy saw that Fields was amazing running the ball. Additionally, the receivers just weren’t getting the job done. He called more running plays for the quarterback. As a result, Fields finished the season with 1,143 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. He became the third quarterback to rush for over 1,000 yards and finished with the second-most rushing yards by a quarterback in NFL history.

However, the point of a quarterback is throwing the ball, right? Well, Fields and the Bears didn’t have the targets. The team’s best receiver, Darnell Mooney, went down and missed the final five games of the season.

Getsy did not quit trying to help Fields develop as a passer. He kept calling Fields to drop back despite not having either a good offensive line or receiving targets. The fans complained about that, seeing that Fields went through a rough time trying to pass the ball.

That move, however, could end up helping Fields in the future. We’ll see how much better he is at trying to throw from the pocket when he has better talent around him. Having Field take those lumps during game situations will only serve to help him going forward. Grade: C
