Predicting NFC West head coaches in 2023

Arizona Cardinals: Vance Joseph (replacing Kliff Kingsbury)

It may not be the sexiest hire right now, but are the Cardinals really in a place to make one of those? They just hired a new GM, Kyler Murray tore his ACL late in the 2022 season, and this roster needs a ton of work. It’s not an altogether unattractive job, but there’s work to be done in Arizona, and who knows how long Kyler Murray will be part of the equation with the new GM coming in?

For now, the best thing for Arizona may be to promote defensive coordinator Vance Joseph into the head coach role. Joseph didn’t excel as a head coach in 2017-18 with the Denver Broncos, but you learn from those experiences and make changes you next time around. He’s considered a great leader and people have seen him as a future NFL head coach for a long time.

Los Angeles Rams: Sean McVay

For a minute here, as I was putting these predictions together, I had someone replacing Sean McVay with the Rams. It seemed like McVay was seriously contemplating retirement once again, and that wouldn’t be overly surprising given the current state of the Rams and his opportunities outside of coaching to work in TV and possibly invest more in his family.

Alas, McVay will be back with the Rams in 2023 and perhaps beyond. He’s been an outstanding coach for them and they got bit badly by the injury bug after winning the Super Bowl last year. McVay delivered on all of the hype by bringing home a Lombardi and there’s no question he’s one of the best offensive minds in the game today.
