Predicting AFC West head coaches in 2023

Los Angeles Chargers: Brandon Staley

Many people were surprised to find out after the Chargers’ epic collapse in the playoffs that Bradon Staley would be keeping his job. Say what you want about the guy as a game manager, but he can coach and scheme defense.

As good as Staley is at coaching defense, areas of his management need to be cleaned up. The fact that he trotted out his starters in Week 18, only to see Mike Williams carted off the field, is inexcusable. The blown lead in the playoffs was also a huge indictment against Staley.

We’ll see how he does in 2023 with new life and a new offensive coordinator.

Denver Broncos: Sean Payton (replacing Nathaniel Hackett)

The Denver Broncos ownership group is said to be swinging big on their next head coach hire, and Sean Payton would fit the bill as a big swing. He’s going to require draft compensation going back to the Saints because he’s still under contract. He’s going to require a contract north of $20 million per year, in all likelihood.

As of right now, it seems the Broncos may be willing to pay that. Could they seal the deal with Payton and the Saints in the next week? Or will they ultimately settle for someone like Dan Quinn?

If the Broncos don’t get Payton, I think it will be a surprise name that lands the job. for now, though, I think signs are pointing to the Broncos being a great option for Payton and a lucrative one at that.
