1. Tony Pollard, Running Back

Kellen Moore is an intelligent person. Anyone who has followed him since his days with Boise State could see coaching was in his future. He saw the game differently than most collegiate quarterbacks and that’s shown throughout much of his short coaching career.

With all that being the case, there’s no way Moore wanted to keep trotting Ezekiel Elliott out there to start every game with a couple of three-and-outs following a few two-yard runs. Instead, it was probably Jerry Jones who made sure the high-priced Elliott got his starts still, then Moore was allowed to use the running back that actually opened the game up.

That would be Tony Pollard, who just had the best season of his four-year career. Pollard recorded 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns and averaged more than five yards per carry for the third time in three seasons. He also added 371 yards and three more touchdowns as a pass-catcher in 2022.

Now entering free agency, Pollard will have to prove he’s healthy following a broken leg and high ankle sprain suffered in the loss to San Francisco this postseason. As long as he’s back to himself, there will be several teams vying for his services and Dallas was kind enough to limit his carries so he will have a lot of tread on the tires for his new team.

One potential team would be the Chargers. While they do have Austin Ekeler, both Pollard and Ekeler are better when used in a committee. They’re also both weapons as receivers out of the backfield, and with Justin Herbert throwing the ball, that’s a good thing to have.

Pollard was criminally under-utilized in Dallas but if Moore can convince him it was the Jones family holding him back, the two could join forces again with the Chargers.
