The New York Jets have brought in a couple of coaches this offseason that have quite a few connections with potential available QBs this offseason.  This could be quite the advantage that the Jets have over other teams that are deciding whether or not to pursue a veteran quarterback this offseason.

They have connections with a whopping four signal callers that could all be on the move this offseason, so General Manager Joe Douglas may actually have his choice between them depending on how the offseason goes with all of this QB movement.

So, let’s look at the connections that the team has and to which quarterbacks.

New York Jets have quarterback connections on staff

Jimmy Garoppolo

The first connection is one that many people looked at earlier in the 2022 season.  Robert Saleh, the team’s head coach spent time with the San Francisco 49ers while Garoppolo was there.  Jimmy G was just about the first quarterback that many in the media pegged to go to the New York Jets in the offseason.

Maybe a connection with a former defensive coordinator and QB is nothing, but it could also be something.

Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett to be their offensive coordinator after a disastrous tenure as the Denver Broncos’ head coach.

Hackett also has not had a great track record as an OC, but he was the OC in Green Bay for a few years while Rodgers won back to back MVP awards.  I personally think the Jets hired Hackett to lure Rodgers, as the Broncos likely did.

Aaron Rodgers’ darkness retreat might sway him one way or the other.

Maybe he has daydreams of Joe Namath during this retreat.

Derek Carr and Ryan Tannehill

New York recently hired Todd Downing as the passing game coordinator after a shaky tenure as the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator.  Well, Downing has connections with both Derek Carr and Ryan Tannehill.

From 2015-2017, Downing was on the offensive staff with the Raiders while Carr was still there.

Then, from 2019-2022, he was with the Tennessee Titans as well and served for two years as the OC in 2021 and 2022.

Ryan Tannehill wasn’t nearly as good in 2021 and 2022 with Downing calling plays as he was the previous years with Arthur Smith, but there are still connections there.

To me, the best move for the long-term would be Derek Carr, then Jimmy Garoppolo.

After that, I’d put Rodgers at the third best option and Tannehill at the fourth.
