You can’t fall asleep in the NFL offseason. On Friday night, a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero surfaced that league sources are telling him it’s become increasingly likely that the Los Angeles Rams are going to trade star cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the coming weeks. This news comes on the heels of news that linebacker Bobby Wagner was released after signing a contract in free agency just last year.

Here’s more information on NFL Network from Pelissero and the crew reacting to the news.

If Jalen Ramsey is going to be traded, the Rams should be able to recoup at least a first-round pick for him, and perhaps something nice on top of that. It seems they’re in cap-clearing mode so player-for-player deals probably aren’t in the cards, but never say never.

Given the fact that the cost to acquire him is going to be high, what teams are in a position to make such a trade right now? What teams make the most sense and might be the most motivated to make a deal like this? Let’s look at the top three.

1. Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have kept the band together as far as their coaching staff is concerned, at least with both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who both go pay raises in the offseason after interviewing for head coaching jobs. Dan Campbell is building something special in Detroit. It’s not often that this is a team that pops up as a potential destination in a trade situation like this, but here we are.

Jalen Ramsey would be such a massive difference-maker for this Lions team. Aaron Glenn’s defense is just missing a few pieces and Ramsey would be someone that could take his unit to the next level.

It just so happens that the Lions own the Rams’ top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft (6th overall) as well as their own pick (19th overall). I don’t think the Rams would get their own pick (6th) back in this kind of a deal but they might be able to squeeze 19 and some change out of the Lions.

Detroit already has over $25 million in cap space, plenty to be able to accommodate Ramsey’s contract and still make more impact moves.

The fact that Brad Holmes — GM of the Lions — has previously worked with Les Snead and the Rams could mean that the Lions already have an inside track on this kind of trade.
