Indianapolis Colts: 2023 NFL Draft pick (Will Levis? CJ Stroud? Anthony Richardson?)

Possible backup options: Gardner Minshew, Easton Stick

The Indianapolis Colts are poised to make a complete overhaul of their quarterback position in 2023, and it starts with the hiring of head coach Shane Steichen. What Steichen has done at the quarterback position in recent years really cannot be overstated.

Steichen worked with the Chargers as recently as 2020 when they were breaking in rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. He got hired by Nick Sirianni and the Eagles in 2021 as they were developing and designing an offense for Jalen Hurts. Those guys have both become MVP candidates in a hurry and both were developed, at least in part, by Steichen.

The Colts have got to feel pretty confident that he’s going to be able to put together a plan for any variety of rookie quarterbacks to succeed pretty quickly. They hold the 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft so they won’t exactly have their choice, but if they like all four of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, and Anthony Richardson?

Well, they’re in good shape, then.

There will probably be a bridge QB for the Colts this year, but I don’t think it’s going to be anyone that Steichen and his staff are going to feel obligated to keep on the field for a long period of time.

Gardner Minshew coming over with Steichen from Philadelphia makes a ton of sense, and so does Easton Stick from the Chargers. The Chargers drafted Stick in 2019 when Steichen was their QBs coach.
