NFL 2023: Predicting the starting QB for all 32 teams pre-NFL Free Agency
AFC East 2023 quarterback predictions ahead of NFL Free Agency
New York Jets: Derek Carr (replacing Zach Wilson, etc)
Possible backup options: Zach Wilson, Mike White, Brett Rypien
If you want to call it the Derek Carr “sweepstakes”, I think the Jets stand a pretty good chance of winning. The Jets may be holding out hope that they can trade for Aaron Rodgers, but they shouldn’t wait too long or they’re going to be in the Ryan Tannehill market quicker than they can blink.
The Jets have already hosted Derek Carr on a free agent visit. They’ve already done the courting and I find it hard to believe that Carr came away anything but impressed by head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Hackett is one of the most player-friendly coaches in the league, and although he was bad as a head coach in Denver, he should thrive as the OC in New York.
The Jets have one of the best head coaches in the league in Saleh. They have some nice pieces offensively in rookie of the year Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall. They currently have players like Elijah Moore, Braxton Berrios, and Corey Davis, although the wide receiver room could change with the recent hiring of Zach Azzanni as wide receivers coach.
Regardless, this team has an ascending defense and a player like Carr could be the missing piece.
This would allow the Jets to trade Zach Wilson or make him the backup. I love the idea of Brett Rypien following Hackett to New York and serving as a backup quarterback and player-coach. He’s an asset in the QB room.
