NFL 2023: Predicting the starting QB for all 32 teams pre-NFL Free Agency
Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert
Possible backup options: Cooper Rush, Mike White, or Carson Wentz (replacing Chase Daniel)
The Los Angeles Chargers’ season ended in a very disappointing fashion, but somewhat shockingly, the team decided not to move on from head coach Brandon Staley. For all his odd decision-making at times, the Chargers passed on a chance to perhaps pair Justin Herbert with Sean Payton — or anyone from this coaching cycle, for that matter.
The vote of confidence in Staley certainly isn’t without merit. He hasn’t been a horrible head coach, by any means. But the Chargers did make major changes to the offensive staff, firing Joe Lombardi and bringing in Kellen Moore from the Dallas Cowboys.
There is undoubtedly intrigue here with the arrival of Kellen Moore, the potential marriage between him and Herbert, and how that all affects the Chargers’ offense going forward. As far as the question of who will be the Chargers QB in 2023? There is no intrigue.
But the backup spot is up for grabs. It might be someone slightly boring with Kellen Moore coming in and his prior connections, but this year’s free agent market is a pretty full group of guys that would be intriguing in Los Angeles.
Could Cooper Rush follow Kellen Moore to Los Angeles? Absolutely.
Mike White was also with the Cowboys for a spell before we saw him finally get some playing time with the Jets this past season.
Carson Wentz could also be interesting. We have seen Tom Telesco dip into the talent pool of the Dakotas before (Easton Stick, Trey Pipkins, Derrek Tuszka, Kyle Emanuel, etc.) so perhaps he has already, at some point, taken a liking to Wentz. Wentz is similar to Herbert physically and could work well in Kellen Moore’s offense.
