NFL 2023: Predicting the starting QB for all 32 teams pre-NFL Free Agency
Los Angeles Rams: Matthew Stafford
Possible backup options: Baker Mayfield, Mike White, Sam Darnold
Things with the Los Angeles Rams right now are a little in limbo, at least that’s what it feels like. The Rams seemingly have a core of players they can win with right now, but after winning Super Bowl LVI, things kind of hit the fan with this team in 2022.
The Rams struggled badly with injuries. Matthew Stafford, specifically, only played in nine total games and had just 10 touchdowns along with eight interceptions in those games. Things did not click with free agent pickup Allen Robinson right away, Cooper Kupp got hurt, and the Rams offensive line was clearly missing players like Andrew Whitworth at left tackle and Austin Corbett at the guard position.
All of that being said, Stafford is going to be back this season after some rumors that he may hang up the cleats, and I think he’s a viable comeback player of the year candidate. Hopefully, the Rams’ core is able to stay healthy. We know general manager Les Snead is going to be aggressive in finding some upgrades for this roster, but another down year and we might see this team get blown up.
Behind Stafford, the idea of Baker Mayfield returning has plenty of merit. He got a little audition late in the 2022 season under Sean McVay and he looked solid. Perhaps that is the best spot to rehab his value. It also wouldn’t be shocking to see Mike White come out to LA along with his former OC in New York, Mike LaFleur.
Perhaps we see the Rams take a shot on another reclamation project like Sam Darnold to be on the roster behind Stafford. I think they need to have a backup plan they feel confident can help them win if need be, given the fact that Stafford is coming off of a year in which he missed eight games.
