Bryce Young measured out even smaller than expected at the Combine
Alabama star quarterback Bryce Young may very well end up being the top overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. If that ends up being the case, he would be in the Kyler Murray category in terms of size. Folks don’t seem to be overly concerned about Bryce Young’s size, although, at the same time, they kind of do. On the Alabama website, Young is listed as 6-0, 194 pounds.
In reality? He’s not quite that size…
Bryce Young’s combine measurements put NFL Draft stock in question?
Bryce Young’s height at the Scouting Combine is identical to what Kyler Murray measured back in 2019. 5-foot-10 and 1/8 of an inch isn’t exactly 6-feet tall, but he’s going to be playing in cleats, right? The more important measurement here is probably Young’s hand size, and at 9 3/4 inches, his hand size won’t be an issue when it comes to gripping the ball.
I’m sure Young put on as much weight as he could before the Combine but when you look at him, he certainly doesn’t have the same type of almost stocky build as Kyler Murray who also checked into the Combine at 207 pounds.
In reality, Young is just a slighter guy. At a shade over 5-foot-10, 204 pounds, Young will have the chance to prove at the NFL level that size really doesn’t matter. When you watch the way he played at Alabama in the SEC, it truly didn’t matter all that much, although the NFL is a different kind of ballgame. Maybe 10 years ago, Young’s size would have been a sticking point. In today’s NFL? It’s really not that big of a deal.
It’s just important to remember that you have to evaluate these guys based on tape, and also know that the NFL game has really evolved in recent years. Smaller quarterbacks can have success and plenty of it. You don’t have to be a statue in the pocket, able to see over a wall of 6-foot-7 linemen. This isn’t 2004.
