4. The Houston Texans should sign C Ethan Pocic in free agency

There are many reasons the Houston Texans offense ranked 31st in total yards and 30th in points scored. Their biggest one was the subpar production they got from the quarterback position. Another one was their inability to protect whoever lined up behind center. As a group, their offensive line gave up 38 sacks and center Scott Quessenberrry was the worst of the bunch.

Even though left guard Kenyon Green led Houston with 47 total pressures, he should make strides in his sophomore campaign. Meanwhile, Quessenberry gave up a team-high seven sacks and was a liability more often than not in 2022. The Texans could also use an upgrade at right guard but the center position should be one of their top priorities this offseason.

Fortunately for general manager Nick Caserio, there will be a handful of quality centers available in free agency and if the Texans want to secure the best one, they should then target Ethan Pocic, who will be hitting the open market after signing a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns last offseason.

A second-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, Pocic is the best center in Pro Football Focus’ list of interior offensive linemen set to be free agents this year. Center Ryan Jensen got a three-year contract worth $39 million from Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pocic could get a deal in that range.

Although the Texans will probably need to fork out plenty of money to ink Pocic, signing him will ensure that whoever plays quarterback for them in 2023 will be well-protected.
