1. The Houston Texans should sign Jacoby Brissett in free agency

For a hot minute, it looked like Deshaun Watson was going to be the Houston Texans quarterback for years to come but their relationship progressively deteriorated for several reasons and they ended up shipping him, along with a sixth-round selection, to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for three first-round picks, a 2022 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2024.

The Texans used one of their first-round pick on guard Kenyon Green in the 2022 draft and there’s a 99 percent chance they’ll select a quarterback with the second one this year. Houston gave Davis Mills a chance to prove he was the long-term answer at the position last season and he came crashing down.

Set to choose at No. 3 in this year’s draft, the Texans will be in a position to take one of the top quarterback prospects. Whether they take C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, or even Will Levis, Houston is better off letting their rookie signal-call sit and learn in his rookie campaign and add a veteran in free agency. After all, it doesn’t make to rush their quarterback of the future and run the risk of ruining him.

Jimmy Garoppolo is an option but the veteran passer has failed to stay healthy and will probably ask for top compensation in the open market. A better alternative is Jacoby Brissett, who has starting experience and could serve as a mentor for whichever quarterback the Texans draft.

Brissett’s 18-30 record as a starting quarterback isn’t something to write about but he played well in relief of Watson last season, completing 64.0 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

The bottom line is that Brissett could keep the Texans competitive while their quarterback of the future develops without having to break the buck.
