The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the best and most well-constructed teams in the NFL heading into 2023. They are fresh off of a Super Bowl win in February and have already made some big-money moves in free agency, signing offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor away from the Jacksonville Jaguars and also bringing in defensive lineman Charles Omenihu from the San Francisco 49ers.

But what is this team going to do to upgrade the wide receiver position, if anything?

JuJu Smith-Schuster has taken his TikTok talents to the Patriots. Mecole Hardman remains a free agent and while it’s possible he returns to KC on a short-term deal, he’s considered gone at this point. The Chiefs obviously said goodbye to Tyreek Hill in the 2022 offseason in a trade with the Dolphins, and they went with the budget-friendly route to replace him for a year. Let’s take a look at the state of the wide receiver position right now in KC.

Kansas City Chiefs WR position outlook in March 2023

  • Kadarius Toney
  • Skyy Moore
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling
  • Ihmir Smith-Marsette (futures deal)
  • Cornell Powell
  • John Ross (futures deal)
  • Justyn Ross

Even if you really like the potential of some of the guys on this list like John Ross or Justyn Ross, I think it’s safe to say that Kansas City could make a big move or two here at the receiver position and really upgrade this unit. But how?

Let’s take a look at three big moves this team could make to add to the WR position.

1. Sign Odell Beckham Jr.

Few players on this year’s free agent market are going to make as big of an impact in 2023 as Odell Beckham Jr., at least in my opinion. I think we’re going to see Beckham sign somewhere relatively soon and I think it’s going to end up being one of the sneakiest moves of the year because this is a guy who can really help someone as an all-around playmaker.

You don’t necessarily want to bring in Beckham thinking he’s going to be your WR1. I don’t think with his injury history that you can actually bank on that being a good idea. But you sign him with the intent of getting as much out of him as you can for 17 games (however many he would end up playing) as well as hopefully having him at full strength for the playoffs.

And that’s where he can be so much more dangerous for KC than with other teams. The Chiefs are a team that would excel on offense without Odell, but just imagine how tough this team would be with his skills added to the mix come January or February.

It would be like a dominant baseball team adding an elite relief pitcher to shut teams down in the late innings while already having one of the best bullpen ERAs in the league.

Beckham Jr. looked good in the footage that got out from his private workout, which we know the Chiefs attended.
