Despite the impressive showing that then-rookie quarterback Sam Howell put on in the last game of the regular season, the quarterback situation wasn’t set in stone for the Washington Commanders heading into the offseason.

The franchise gave up draft picks last offseason for Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke had a solid season with him becoming a fan favorite. However, both quarterbacks are gone with Wentz getting waived and Heinicke joining the Atlanta Falcons.

The Commanders didn’t leave Howell without a backup for too long as they signed journeyman Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, per John Keim of ESPN. With it appearing that Howell is going to be the future at the quarterback position for Washington, signing Brissett makes sense.

Signing Jacoby Brissett was the right move for the Washington Commanders.

After the miserable season that Wentz had, it only makes sense that he was cut from the team. Letting Heinicke walk was probably a harder decision for the Commanders considering he was the most stable quarterback the franchise has had since Kirk Cousins. However, letting him go gives Howell full confidence from the front office that he is their guy.

Adding a journeyman like Brissett to come in makes sense on several fronts. Brissett has a record of 18-30 with stops with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Cleveland Browns. While the starting record isn’t encouraging, he actually has had solid stats.

Brissett’s career stats

  • 48 Touchdowns
  • 23 Interceptions
  • 61.1 Completion percentage
  • 896 running yards

With Brissett, the best-case scenario for Washington is that they have a high-end backup who can finish games when necessary. The worst-case scenario is that Howell isn’t the guy and they have a guy in Brissett who can manage games for them.

Brissett is a low-cost backup who has experience starting and with the deal only being one year, the Washington Commanders can pivot quickly if the union doesn’t work out. Overall, considering the direction of the franchise, Brissett is a solid backup to have on the roster.
