The NFL Draft is quickly approaching and as a result, it feels appropriate to start evaluating potential options for each pick that the Washington Commanders have. With that being the case, the 16th pick is the first pick to be discussed.

Before jumping into the three options for the Commanders at this pick, there are two honorable mentions that we have to talk about first.

Running back Bijan Robinson Texas is one of the best running backs in the country, but due to Washington’s adequate depth at the position already, there’s no need to use a first-round pick on another running back. If the Commanders didn’t already upgrade their offensive line, then O’Cyrus Torrence would be a good choice to fill that role.

With that being said, let’s begin.

Washington Commanders 3 options with the 16th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft

1. Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame

The tight end position might not be the biggest position of need considering that the Commanders already have Logan Thomas and Armani Rogers headlining the position. However, added depth could be needed considering the depth at the other offensive skills positions.

Thomas has struggled to stay healthy in Washington as he’s only 36 games in three seasons. Rogers was an undrafted rookie who switched from a college quarterback to a tight end who’s still learning the position. Adding a quality player on that depth chart could be warranted.

With that in mind, Michael Mayer from Notre Dame is probably the best option for the Commanders. ESPN’s Jordan Reid (subscription needed) has Mayer as the first tight end taken in the draft, at the 29th pick to the Saints.

Reid raves about Mayer’s ability to block and catch at the position. With him measuring in at 6-foot-4 and 265 lbs, it’s hard not to argue that. Last season, he logged 67 catches, 809 yards, and nine touchdowns. Whoever is quarterbacking the team next season would love to use a weapon like Mayer.
