Surprise pick at number one in this 2023 NFL mock draft
28. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame
I struggled with the previous pick with the Bills, where I considered tight end Michael Mayer but ultimately decided the offensive tackle filled a bigger need, which made Mayer available to the Cincinnati Bengals at 28. I couldn’t pass up on Mayer again.
Mayer by some, is considered a can’t-miss prospect in the NFL. He brings athleticism, and pass-catching ability, and can block as well. He’s essentially the total package. He was even nicknamed “Baby Gronk” but most say the better comparison is to that of the Ravens’ tight end, Mark Andrews, or former Cowboy, Jason Witten.
If the Bengals get a player comparable to either of them, paired with the trio of wide receivers and Joe Burrow, their offense would be on another level than what we’ve seen in the last couple of years.
Mayer played three seasons with Notre Dame, playing 36 games, compiling 180 receptions, 2,099 yards, and 18 touchdowns. Not only was he highly productive in the passing game, but he’s also an asset in the blocking game, whether that be pass protection or run blocking.
