Surprise pick at number one in this 2023 NFL mock draft
6. Detroit Lions: Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas Tech
Tyree Wilson has all the measurables, height, weight, and wingspan even. He projects very well as an edge rusher at the NFL level and could give the Lions a great one-two punch on their defensive line with Aiden Hutchinson on the other side.
The Lions need help on the defensive side of the ball, already have one of the better offenses in the NFL but struggled greatly to stop anyone either. Wilson could go a long way toward solving that problem.
There are some concerns with his overall speed and may struggle to get around the better tackles in the NFL, which will force him to learn and master a larger arsenal of pass-rush moves to compensate. He brings great size though, coupled with quickness and a strong ability to change directions, he should be able to use these assets to his advantage.
In his final two seasons at Texas Tech, he produced 74 total pressures but only resulted in 14 total sacks, which is where the concern with his overall speed comes into play. He can annoy the quarterback, which isn’t a bad thing, but at the next level will he be able to turn that annoyance into drive-ending sacks?
