Perhaps it is stating the obvious that the New York Jets need to close the door on their potential trade with the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This has been a popular topic for months but negotiations over compensation for the Packers are delaying the transaction. In short, the Jets need this trade to happen more than the Packers need it to happen. Here are three reasons why the Jets have to expedite negotiations and get Rodgers to New York.

Reason no. 3: Zach Wilson is no longer welcome

The team itself, especially the new young core of the New York Jets, is over the Zach Wilson era. The Jets finished the season with a 7-10 record and Wilson was not a contributor to what little success the team experienced. Wilson finished the season playing in only nine games due to injury. Wilson logged 1,688 passing yards with 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Members of the team supported Wilson when asked jarring questions by the media but that only lasted for so long until they saw there was a chance that Wilson could be replaced. The prospect of getting Aaron Rodgers in New York was too much for the team to handle. Since news broke that the Jets were pursuing Aaron Rodgers several prominent members of the team were quick to take to social media to express their delight.

Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson had a stellar season despite the rotating quarterback situation in New York. Aside from Jets cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, who burned his Green Bay cheesehead as a sign of respect for Rodgers, Wilson appeared to be the most excited when news broke about Rodgers.

The writing is on the wall; the rest of the team is ready to move on from Zach Wilson and anyone other than Aaron Rodgers will devastate the locker room. Wilson no longer has a home in New York and should move on for a second opportunity elsewhere. The Jets need to deliver on the promises made surrounding Aaron Rodgers or they will also lose the locker room.
