Reason no. 2: Joe Douglas’ Legacy with the New York Jets Depends on it

Joe Douglas has been the general manager of the New York Jets for four years now. In that time frame the Jets have amassed an overall record of 20-49. While Douglas isn’t the coach nor the quarterback he is responsible for putting the right players on the field. His draft in 2022 was easily the best of his career selecting both the Offensive Rookie of the Year (Garrett Wilson) and the Defensive Rookie of the Year (Ahmad Gardner). Douglas also selected running back Breece Hall in the second round who was a first-round talent before an injury sidelined his season.

Douglas’ job must be safe after a draft like that right?

Not quite. Douglas was also responsible for drafting quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in 2020 and wide receiver Elijah Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Moore is now a member of the Cleveland Browns and failed to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards or more in the last two seasons combined.

Not everyone can say that they saw it coming but Wilson went from the second pick overall in the draft to being benched in favor of Canadian Football League quarterback Chris Streveler in Week 16 of the 2022 season. Wilson is currently slated to be the backup quarterback if Douglas delivers on his latest promise; bringing Aaron Rodgers to New York.

Douglas needs to keep his promise to keep his legacy and his job intact. Douglas has delivered in securing top talent in many positions on the football field. But as the history of the Jets has shown us, they are still lacking at the quarterback position. Bringing in a Super Bowl Champion and 4x MVP quarterback in Aaron Rodgers would cement Douglas’ “All Gas No Brakes” mentality that he and head coach Robert Saleh have adopted. If Douglas fails the Jets fan base, not to mention his own team, will likely lose faith in Douglas’ abilities as there does not appear to be a backup plan in place, aside from turning to the defunct Wilson.
