According to Adam Schefter, Jalen Hurts has agreed to a contract extension worth $255 million over five years with the Philadelphia Eagles. Over $179 million is guaranteed in the deal. Hurts is the first QB in a big class of QBs that will get extended this offseason. Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, and Joe Burrow are other names that should soon follow in his footsteps.

According to Tom Pelissero, $110 million of that $179 million is guaranteed at signing (with the other being guaranteed when he is able to be on the roster every start of the new league year) but it is expected that he will reach at least $126 million if he is able to be on the roster in the new league year next year. Additionally, as reported by the talented duo of Rapoport and Pelissero, Hurts has a no-trade clause in his deal.

Jalen Hurts resets the quarterback contract market

This new deal for Jalen Hurts put him above Aaron Rodgers at $51 million average annual value, the highest at the quarterback position in the NFL right now. Only two players (Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray) received more in practical guarantees than Hurts on their new deals.

Herbert and Burrow will get no doubt extended at some point in the near future by their respective teams, but with Lamar Jackson, it seems it may take a while for him to get extended due to his and Baltimore’s quarrel over guaranteed money.

What is interesting about this reported deal is that near close to the amount of guaranteed money that Lamar Jackson reported received in a deal a while ago from the Ravens. According to a report that has been disputed by Jackson himself,  Baltimore offered $175 million guaranteed if injured (which would presumedly be the reason he gets cut as he is very young and will not drop due to skill for a long time.)

While only 70 percent of this deal is guaranteed, it should be expected that Hurts end up on the Eagles’ roster for at least the rest of this deal. While this deal will most definitely be revised with the Eagles and Hurts converting money in this deal into a signing bonus in future league years, the Young QB will be in Philly for a long time.
