Trey Lance could be available in a trade just days before 2023 NFL Draft
According to Ian Rapoport, Trey Lance is available in trade talks as Brock Purdy will be the starter for the San Francisco 49ers this season. From word of other reporters, it seems that San Francisco is trying to move on from Lance who is a bit of a mixed bag since San Fran traded up two first-round picks and swap to select him.
The 49ers seem to be going all-in with the idea that Brock Purdy will be the starting QB with Sam Darnold as the backup. Purdy will return from injury by training camp and should be ready for the preseason at the latest (this is if rehab has setbacks).
It seems that the 49ers were calling teams to see the interest in Trey Lance. This was not a situation where teams were calling the 49ers but rather the other way around according to Rapoport.
A number of QB-needy teams could use a late second or third-round pick to give a flyer to a player who still has talent. Lance has had a weird career so far.
He was semi-redshirted his first year with him only playing in a few games. In his second year, he didn’t play horribly but not well on a very rainy day at Soldier Field against the Bears in his first game. In Week 2 he got injured and was out for the rest of the year.
Based on the tiny sample size of Lance, one could say that he definitely has that explosive juice play that scouts raved about coming out of college but he certainly isn’t completely consistent. Again this is a very small sample size.
At the end of the day, the QB position will not be something of strength for the 49ers. They have the second if not best roster in the NFC but the QB position will be something that needs to be uplifted by playmakers like Deebo Samuel, and Christian McCaffrey.
Additionally, Kyle Shanahan will need to whip up his QB magic once again to make sure everything is running smoothly. These things combined with the 49ers’ solid offensive line will lead to anyone with NFL talent handling the QB position having the chance to succeed.
